Every ASTM A312 pipe and A403 fitting must be supplied in the solution-annealed condition. It is not an optional extra; it is what gives austenitic stainless steel its full corrosion resistance and ductility after manufacturing.

What solution annealing does

  • Dissolves carbides – chromium carbides formed during hot working or forming are taken back into solution.
  • Restores corrosion resistance – chromium is evenly distributed again, preventing sensitisation.
  • Relieves stresses and softens the steel – cold work from forming or drawing is removed, restoring ductility.
  • Recrystallises the grain structure – giving uniform mechanical properties.

Typical temperatures

GradeMinimum solution temperature (typical)
304, 304L, 316, 316L1040 °C
304H, 316H1040 °C (higher temperatures used to control grain size)
321H, 347H1095 °C cold finished / 1050 °C hot finished
904L1100 °C approx.

Exact temperatures depend on the product specification and grade; always follow the ASTM standard and the purchase order.

Why rapid cooling matters

After heating, the steel must be cooled quickly, by water quench or rapid air cooling, through the 850–425 °C range. Slow cooling would let carbides re-form and undo the benefit.

Fittings after forming

Hot forming of elbows, tees and reducers takes the metal through sensitising temperatures. That is why ASTM A403 requires fittings to be solution annealed after forming, not just made from annealed pipe.

What to check on the MTC

  • Heat treatment condition: "Solution annealed and water quenched"
  • Temperature and soaking time (if required by the order)
  • Hardness and tensile results consistent with the annealed condition
  • Any IGC test results if specified

Frequently asked questions

What temperature is used for solution annealing 316L?

Typically a minimum of about 1040 °C, followed by rapid cooling.

Why must stainless fittings be annealed after forming?

Hot forming can sensitise the steel and cold forming adds stress; annealing restores corrosion resistance and ductility.

What happens if stainless steel is cooled slowly after annealing?

Chromium carbides can form at grain boundaries, reducing corrosion resistance.

Key takeaways

  • Solution annealing restores corrosion resistance and ductility.
  • Typical minimum for 304/316 grades is about 1040 °C with rapid cooling.
  • Check heat treatment details on the MTC.
