The elbow is the most ordered pipe fitting in almost every project. Every change of direction in a pipeline needs one, and a single plant can use thousands. Because elbows are so common, buyers often send short enquiries such as "4 inch elbow SS 316" and expect the supplier to fill the gaps. A clear understanding of elbow types avoids wrong deliveries and makes comparison between quotations much easier.

What an elbow does

A buttweld elbow changes the direction of flow between two pipes of the same size. Its ends are bevelled so it can be butt-welded directly to the pipe, giving a smooth bore and a joint as strong as the pipe itself. Dimensions for buttweld elbows are set by ASME B16.9 (factory-made wrought fittings) and, for short radius elbows, also by ASME B16.28, which is now merged into B16.9.

Elbows by angle

  • 90° elbow – turns the line through a right angle. This is the most common elbow by far.
  • 45° elbow – a gentler turn with less pressure drop, used for offsets and where a 90° turn is too abrupt.
  • 180° return bend – turns the flow back on itself. Used in heat exchangers, furnace coils and heating or cooling loops.
  • Special angles – 30°, 60° or any other angle can be cut from a 90° elbow or made to order.

Long radius vs short radius

The radius of an elbow is measured from its centre-line and expressed as a multiple of the nominal pipe size (D).

TypeCentre-line radiusTypical use
Long radius (LR)1.5 DThe default choice. Lower pressure drop and smoother flow.
Short radius (SR)1.0 DTight spaces where an LR elbow will not fit. Higher pressure drop.
3D / 5D bends3 D or 5 DPigging lines and slurry service, usually made as pipe bends.

For a 4" elbow, a long radius 90° has a centre-to-end dimension of 152 mm (6"), while a short radius 90° is 102 mm (4"). If an enquiry does not say LR or SR, most suppliers will assume long radius, but it is always better to state it.

Seamless and welded elbows

Elbows are made either from seamless pipe, by hot forming over a mandrel, or from welded pipe or plate. In stainless steel to ASTM A403, the class is shown in the grade: WP-S for seamless, WP-W for welded with radiography of the weld, and WP-WX for welded with 100% radiography. For carbon steel, ASTM A234 WPB is the usual grade.

Wall thickness must match the pipe

An elbow is ordered by the same schedule as the pipe it joins: SCH 10S, 40S, 80S and so on. A mismatch between elbow and pipe thickness creates a step inside the joint, which causes turbulence and makes welding and radiography harder. When in doubt, quote the pipe outside diameter and wall thickness in millimetres as well as the schedule.

How to write an elbow enquiry

A complete elbow description looks like this:

Elbow 90° LR, 4" SCH 40S, ASTM A403 WP316L-S, ASME B16.9, bevelled ends – 50 nos
  • Angle and radius – 90° LR
  • Size and schedule – 4" SCH 40S
  • Material and class – ASTM A403 WP316L, seamless
  • Dimensional standard – ASME B16.9
  • Quantity and documents – number of pieces and the test certificate you need, usually EN 10204 3.1

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between LR and SR elbows?

A long radius (LR) elbow has a centre-line radius of 1.5 times the nominal size, while a short radius (SR) elbow has a radius equal to the nominal size. LR elbows give lower pressure drop; SR elbows save space.

Which elbow is used most often?

The 90° long radius buttweld elbow is the most commonly specified elbow in process piping.

Can a 45° elbow be cut from a 90° elbow?

Yes. Fabricators often cut special angles from 90° elbows, but a factory-made 45° elbow is preferred where dimensions and traceability matter.

What does WP316L-S mean?

It is an ASTM A403 wrought stainless fitting in grade 316L, made from seamless material (S).

Key takeaways

  • 90° LR is the default elbow; state SR only when space demands it.
  • Match the elbow schedule to the pipe to avoid a step at the weld.
  • Always give angle, radius, size, schedule, grade, standard and quantity.
